TRIANGULATION

Triangulation is integral to figuring out both where we are and where we need to be. Whether it’s via GPS, cell phone, or something else, multiple perspectives are necessary to arrive at a clear, practical answer. The more perspectives you get, the more accurate your GPS position.

Weather data is no different. The inherent fuzziness of the data means that any weather product, when used for the wrong application, works a lot like a poorly-triangulated GPS location. It’s better than nothing, but doesn’t really tell you what you need to know.

Canopy Weather factors in essential, overlooked variables to create triangulated, application-first datasets. We then use these triangulated datasets to provide valuable new insights with specific, real-world business applications.

A Real-World Example

Property Hail Damage Technology

In search of a deeper understanding of the storm restoration industry, Canopy co-founders Don and Matt left CoreLogic in 2016. They sought out opportunities in construction that would lead to new insights on day-to-day operations throughout the entire restoration lifecycle. By participating in the full process from storm, sales, claims, materials, installs, and inspections, Don and Matt learned how weather truly impacts both the building materials and the decision-making process from start to finish.

Several years, three states, dozens of storms and over 2,000 roofs later, they got what they were looking for.

Through this experience, new insights emerged. We learned at a visceral level just how much damage can vary not only from street to street, but even property to property. Hail volume, building materials, age, and other factors all play a role in determining to what degree a property sustains damage. For instance, a tile roof has a completely different damage tolerance than a 30-year asphalt shingle. Same for a TPO versus a Modified Bitumen roof.

Our technology is the first to take details like this into account.

By building our own datasets from scratch with a laser focus on answering a specific question, we are able to triangulate new insights and provide a level of accuracy that’s unrivaled in our industry.
